Repacking for the next journey…

We regularly hear the phrase, “What got your here won’t get you there” and it’s often true. For people who have recently become managers for the first time it is especially pertinent. The skills that made you a strong individual contributor may well hold you back as a manager. To grow and thrive in the new role you will need to set aside some of your old habits, even though they served you well, and adopt some new ones. Figuring out what kind of leader you want to be, and how to become that leader, will likely take a while and involve some trial and error.

One related subject that came up this week was, “I really hate watching people in my team struggle… I want to jump in and help them”. That’s understandable, but sometimes it’s right to give your reports the opportunity to learn on their own. When to get involved will vary depending on the person and the situation — more on that when I discuss the value of situational leadership.
