Why I rarely post tips…

One of the client quotes that most inspires me is, “I’ve never once felt like Robert’s provided me with recycled content that didn’t pertain to what I was seeking“. That’s from my first coaching client, a product leader I worked with in 2016.

I don’t often share general perspectives on product management, not only because there are plenty of people already doing that on Twitter, LinkedIn and elsewhere, but because it is rarely helpful for people who already have a strong understanding of how to succeed in product.

These are my typical clients — usually mid-career and either in leadership roles or looking to make the transition from individual contributor to manager. They know how to build products, how to support a team and how to communicate with senior leaders. They also recognise that they have gaps; specific things that hold them back. By working with me to identify these gaps and generate new, better habits, they can take their careers to the next level.

Yes, PMs should “listen to their customers” and “collaborate effectively with engineering”, but this kind of advice is akin to suggesting you eat healthily or exercise regularly. It is valid but also so generic as to be of little use to someone who is already performing well.

Coaching provides the space to have specific conversations about the challenges you face and what you can do to overcome them. It is unique to you and it can help you to learn patterns of behaviour that will serve you now and in the future.
